The Youth Intervention & Development Program (Y.I.D.) is a Prevention and Education program that assists youth in becoming assets rather than liabilities to
their communities.

Phase: Piggy Back Inc./YID’s programs, which began operating in 1975, are intended for youngsters between the ages of
7 and 14 at risk of drug experimentation, drug use, and/or who are socially and academically dysfunctional. The target population is predisposed to low self-esteem, lack of self confidence and poor self-identity awareness. Usually these characteristics are integrated with tendencies toward violent behavior against self and others, low trust thresholds, lack of self-control and a limited availability to recognize and accept legitimate authority.

We believe that it is essential that drug prevention and education services seek to improve the low self-esteem and negative self-image projections, identified in our adolescent population. An effective substance abuse prevention and education modality is based on understanding the causes and precursors which place young people at risk and provide viable alternatives that offer options and opportunity.

YID prevention education programs are designed to provide youngsters with educational and resocialization activities which encourage them to be pro-active in their development process. This, in effect, is an opportunity for them to help themselves. The resocialization and educational process we devised brings about modified attitudes and behavior with respect to goal orientated living, interpersonal relationships and academic achievement. Group and individual counseling forums both assess Striver’s needs and provide therapy. YID directs their initial focus on recognizing and understanding (as well as they can) any inadequate socialization skills and identify any limitations in their academic skills.

Y.I.D. offers both positive and constructive activities such as: homework assistance, computer literacy, substance abuse prevention/counseling, cultural awareness, rights of passage program, parenting education seminars/workshops, and more.

In 1992, as an outgrowth of the Y.I.D. component, the Phase: Piggy Back New Breed Martial Arts School was established. Since its inception, it has grown by leaps and bounds. Under the direction of Kushinda Luqman Abdul Matin, a 9th degree black belt, hundreds of children have found discipline, enhanced their self-esteem and learned the meaning of respect for those in authority. For those who lacked a father figure, they found a man who filled those shoes admirably.

The Phase: Piggy Back New Breed Martial Arts School is an asset to the Phase: Piggy Back concept, the community and especially to the quality of life for those boys and girls under this supportive umbrella.
